Ten Goal Keyworth Have a Nice Day
It’s amazing how word gets around isn’t it? Following last
week’s emphatic victory I’ve had nothing but plaudits from
a number of unexpected sources about the quality of
football that we’re playing. After this performance I’m
expecting my phone line to be jammed solid! On the day of
the Platt Lane bonfire, we provided the fireworks with a
sparkler of performance to outclass a bewildered Gedling
and make Mr Writer here a happy chappy by setting up a
third round trip to Underwood.
Full of confidence after hitting double figures the
previous week, Keyworth set about Gedling from the start
and were ahead in no time. Beating two defenders Douglas
McConachie made his way into the box and tore in on the
keeper. “Has he got a left foot?” asked Wayne, our team
sponsor. “Watch and learn” I said as Douglas’ smashed a
left footed rocket over the keeper and high into the net
before he could blink.
What a finish! Shortly afterwards the Greens made it two.
Fine skills from Danny Hardy took him into the box and
along the byline before laying the ball into the path of
Marek Nowicki who made no mistake from close in. It was one
way traffic and it wasn’t long before the third goal
arrived. Douglas curling a fine shot home from ten yards
after fine work from Cian Lenihan and Danny. Harry
Stolworthy then added a bizarre, slow motion, fourth.
Danny’s daisy cutter of a corner making it through the
leaves of a thousand trees, bouncing off the knees of a
confused keeper and tapped in by Harry as everyone around
him froze.
Keyworth were now playing some smashing football and it was
no surprise when they extended their lead. The excellent
Luke Crisp combining beautifully with Cian before beating
the keeper with a fine low drive into the bottom left hand
corner from just inside the box - a superb goal.
Five up
at the break after kicking up the slope, the Greens were
rightly ecstatic and shuffled the pack to give players
experience in different positions, not that it changed the
pattern of the game. Keyworth remained in total control and
the inevitable sixth goal soon arrived when Danny’s smart
free kick from the right eluded everyone and crept in at
the far post. With Douglas dropping back into defence it
gave Isaac Brown chance to show his striking prowess -
something he demonstrated admirably five minutes later when
a weak clearance landed at his feet eight yards out. Isaac
needed no second invitation and slipped the ball neatly
past the keeper to put us seven up.
We were appropriately effervescent! Danny then fizzed in
another to make it eight before Reece Farndale, cashing in
on some sloppy defending, kept the sparkle in our
performance with a cool finish from eight yards. Luke then
produced a moment of magic. Picking up the ball in his own
half, he dribbled through the visitors defence to give
himself a free run on goal only to be cynically chopped
down inches outside the box. Although the resultant free
kick came to nothing, there was no stopping Keyworth, who
with the last kick of the match, made it double figures for
the second successive week when Cian delightfully put Peter
Hennessy clear to drive fiercely past the keeper to leave
the net bulging.
Make no mistake, this was as comprehensive a victory as the
score suggests, although in fairness, we played well within
ourselves. Spare a thought for Tony the Gedling manager
who, for the second time in three seasons finds himself
struggling to put a full team out on a regular basis.
Results like this won’t help but he can be proud of the way
his boys battled to the end and tried to play football
throughout. As for us, what a difference a fortnight makes!
Rewind two weeks and we were a confidence-free zone.
Collectively and individually abdicating responsibility and
all too happy to pass the buck.
Now, after consecutive big victories, everyone wants the
ball and confidence is visibly high.Maybe tomorrow, after
the euphoria has subsided, I’ll think differently, but
performances like this convince me that, on our day, we can
match anyone in our division. It means nothing though if we
don’t maintain this level of performance consistently. For
now though I’m just looking forward to next Sunday’s visit
of Vernon Green. It’s now time for us to pick a part that’s
new to us - that of winner against one of the top three!
Curtain up at the Platt Lane theatre is 11am.
